In 2002, Kolomna Locomotive Works (Kolomensky Zavod) – Russian locomotive factory introduced diesel locomotive TEP70A-001. This model was a result of improved TEP70 model. TEP70A-001 was more technologically equipped than previous model. Microprocessor control, diagnosis system (MCDS) was installed and other small changes were made. In 2003, in honour of socialist labour hero – Boris Konstantinovich Salambekov, TEP70 series was renamed TEP70BS (Boris Salambekov). Since then, all the locomotives from number 002 were produced under this label. Serial production of these locomotives began in 2006.
