Lietuvos Geležinkeliai presented the new diesel train “PESA“

On the 15th of February, JSC “Lietuvos Geležinkeliai” presented the new train “PESA 730ML”. It is a modern train produced by a Polish company and driven by a dieseline engine. “PESA 730ML” uses less fuel and emits less harmful gases into the atmosphere, and henceforth it is more ecological. Besides, the new trains are low-floor and adapted for the needs of disabled people. In addition, the trains have air conditioning. There are 150 seats, 16 of which are first class, in the train. All trains possess Wi-Fi technology. The train can reach the speed of up to 160km/h.

They will be used for the route Vilnius-Klaipėda and by autumn 7 such trains will start coursing on this route, which will replace the current locomotives. An increasing demand for the route Vilnius-Klaipėda is noticed – in January 3% more passengers used it than in January 2015, hence the decision to acquire newer and higher quality trains for this route was a logical step.

During the presentation the general director of JSC “Lietuvos Geležinkeliai” Statys Dailydka, Lithuania’s minister of transport and communications Rimantas Sinkevičius and a representative of PESA’s company exclaimed their cooperation, which has been lasting for 21 years and hoped to develop it further in the future. There are already more than one 1,2 or 3-wagoned PESA trains coursing through Lithuanian railways. Such long experience of cooperation was crucial for the choice of this company’s product this time as well. All 7 trains costed 37,7 million euros in total.

In the future JSC “Lietuvos Geležinkeliai” plans to further modernise it technical base. There are plans for the future to electrify the Vilnius-Minsk route and use for it two-level trains, while trains currently used for it transfer to other internal Lithuanian routes.
