On 15 July 2016, a brand new container crane commenced operation at Šeštokai freight yard.
With a lifting capacity of 40 tonnes, the crane, mounted on rails, will ensure the yard will keep up with the constantly increasing amount and weight of cargo. The two existing cranes with lifting power of 12 and 20 tonnes will not be used anymore now the new crane is operating. This will reduce the number of operations and speed up the loading of the cargo. To load a medium size unit of 50 containers, 2 hours was required before the new crane was installed; now it can be done in half the time – 1 hour. The crane is computerized so its performance is constantly monitored by the operator, and in the event of a malfunction or any performance-related issue, the operator can instantly contact the manufacturer and solve the problem as quick as possible.
The new crane, which cost 1,054,000€ was manufactured and built in 9 months, and installation of the crane did not interfere with the regular train traffic and loading of cargo.
“AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai is constantly investing in modern machinery and equipment. Purchase of the container crane proves that the company reacts to changes in the market, variations in demand, and the different needs of clients.” – so said Mr S Dailydka, General Director of the company.
