In preparation for the grain shipping season, AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) has organized several meetings with the Lithuanian Grain Processors Association members, and Lithuanian grain growers and exporters, during which the important matters of transportation of grains and their products were discussed.
As a Director of the Freight Transportation Directorate of the Department of Commerce of AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai, Tatiana Vitkauskaitė said that in order to prepare for the grain shipments of the 2016 – 2017 season, and to avoid interference with the process during its peak, the company did not wait for routine maintenance times, but carried out repairs to the wagons in advance, even before the start of the season, ensuring greater availability of the wagons during the season.
AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai owns 1132 wagons for grain transportation and all of them will be used. Should more be needed, around 200-300 wagons from other railway administrations can be borrowed. It will also involve additional locomotives, and the shuttling frequency of trains will be intensified.
“Lease agreements with different periods of validity ensures the ability to plan costs and revenues for grain growers. This type of contract will also benefit our company by helping to organize the availability of grain wagons in response to customer requests and avoid the problem of shortage of wagons which was experienced last year. For the convenience of both parties, the contract provides rights and obligations, intensive and non-intensive transport periods, helping to plan shipment volumes”- said the Director of the Commerce Department, T Vitkauskaitė.
There are other carriers in the market in Lithuania, which means that grain growers and processors are provided with choices of carrier, and the mode of transportation.
Since 1 September 2015, another facility for grain growers – an electronic signature system, took effect in the field of railway transport. This makes it easier to organize the work of filling in the documents using the electronic equipment at their workplace.
